Hi, Mom! - is it supposed to be THIS uncomfortable?
Okay, so I just finished watching "Hi, Mom!" and...wow. I'm not sure what to make of it. I mean, it's definitely got some weird vibes, right? Like, the whole peeping tom thing with Jon Rubin filming his neighbors is already creepy enough, but then it just gets progressively more…intense. Like, the whole "Be Black, Baby" play within the movie? I was squirming in my seat. Was that supposed to be funny? I think it was supposed to be satirical, maybe?, but it just felt awkward and kind of offensive, tbh. I get that it's a product of its time and probably trying to say something about race and media (or something idk), but I honestly spent most of the movie feeling like I was watching something I shouldn't. And honestly, the 'found footage' style was kinda grating after a while. It made it hard to really connect to anything happening on screen. Like, I appreciate that it's trying to be experimental, and I did find certain bits funny, but overall it just left me feeling kinda icky. Did anyone else have a similar reaction? Also, I can't even find the director! Was the director intentionally uncredited? So basically, what did everyone else think? Am I just being too sensitive, or is this movie actually as messed up as I think it is? Also, does anyone know if De Niro knew what he was getting into when he signed up for this?? He's great, obviously - but man, this movie is a LOT.
