"The Deep": Great for Nostalgia, But...Was I the Only One Uncomfortable?

Okay, so I finally watched "The Deep" (1977) last night. I'd heard snippets about it for years – mostly about how it was a big deal back then. I get the underwater scenes were probably groundbreaking at the time, and Bermuda looks stunning, but yeesh, some of the stuff in this movie felt… off. I'm all for adventure and thrills, but was I the ONLY one cringing a little at the Jessica Lange character? Like, she's presented as this active participant, but she spends a LOT of time in revealing swimwear and in situations where, frankly, it feels like her agency is being stripped. I know it's a product of its time, and I appreciate the effort in showing underwater exploration. But even setting aside my modern sensibilities, the way she was constantly being put in danger just felt...exploitative? Steve, her boyfriend, spends half the movie rescuing her and the other half being clueless. It wasn't a terrible film, but I kept thinking about how I would feel letting my own daughter watch it, and honestly, I have serious reservations. Did anyone else feel similarly? Or am I just being overly sensitive? I'm genuinely curious to know if other parents have tackled this movie and what they thought about navigating the potentially problematic elements with their kids. Is the nostalgia factor enough to outweigh the potential for awkward conversations?
