"Office Romance": More Than Just a Soviet Sitcom, Guys
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Office Romance" (Sluzhebnyy Roman) the other night. I know, I'm late to the party, but damn, this movie is way more than just your typical '70s rom-com. I went in expecting some cheesy Soviet-era humor, and while there's definitely that, it's the subtle stuff that really got me. I mean, the sound design, for one! The way they use silence to emphasize the awkwardness between Novoseltsev and Kalugina? Genius. And the music, especially during the scenes where Novoseltsev is trying (and hilariously failing) to be charming? Perfection. And speaking of Novoseltsev (played by Andrey Myagkov), the guy is a master of physical comedy. I was practically on the floor during the scene where he's trying to talk to Kalugina (Alisa Freindlich) in the hallway. The camera angles, too – the way they frame him as this tiny, insignificant figure against the backdrop of the imposing office building really sells his character. I was also paying attention to how they achieved some of the special effects given the technology restraints of that time. It was pretty good. They certainly did what they could with the resources they had. What really surprised me, though, was the emotional depth. You actually feel for these characters, even the seemingly heartless Kalugina. The scene where she breaks down after the party? Wow. It's a testament to the writing and the actors' performances. It made me realize that the movie isn't just a funny story, but also a clever commentary on Soviet society and the constraints placed on individuals, especially women, in positions of power. Frankly, I think it's aged surprisingly well. It's not a perfect film (the pacing drags a little in the middle), but it's a really solid watch and I'd recommend it if you're looking for something a bit different. Plus, it gives you a glimpse into a world that doesn't really exist anymore. Def worth a watch in my book! Let me know what you guys think if you've seen it!
