Black Sunday: Is This the Most Underrated Super Bowl Movie EVER?

Okay, people, moviebuff_marc here, crawling out of my Gen X cave to talk about "Black Sunday" (1977). Anyone remember this nail-biter? I caught it on late-night TV as a kid and it messed me up for YEARS. We're talking Bruce Dern playing a seriously unhinged Vietnam vet, piloting the Goodyear blimp packed with explosives over the Super Bowl. Seriously, who thinks of that?! It scared the living daylights out of me. Here's a theory I've been kicking around: "Black Sunday" is basically "Jaws" on land…or I guess, in the air? Think about it: You've got the impending doom, the constant tension, the race against time. Roy Scheider is replaced by Robert Shaw, er, I mean, the Israeli agent played by Robert Shaw (RIP). Instead of a shark, you've got a freakin' blimp! And instead of Amity Island, you've got the Super Bowl. The only difference? Less swimsuits and more football helmets. Sure, it's a bit cheesy at times and maybe some of the acting hasn't aged super well, but the underlying themes of post-Vietnam disillusionment and the paranoia of terrorism, those are sadly still relevant today. I think what gets me is how realistic it felt. Remember that scene where they're trying to figure out Dern's plan and they keep cutting back to the blimp slowly making its way to the stadium? My heart was pounding just thinking about it. It made the Super Bowl, which I already thought was a spectacle, seem almost dangerous. It might even be better than "Two Minute Warning", but don't quote me on that. So, am I the only one who thinks "Black Sunday" is one of the most underrated action/thriller movies of the '70s? Maybe it's just my Gen X nostalgia kicking in, but I think it deserves a re-watch. Tell me what you think! Did this movie scare you back in the day? What are it's strengths and weaknesses? Let's hear it!
