Audrey Rose Messed Me UP. Seriously.
Okay, so I just finished watching "Audrey Rose" (1977) and wow. Just...wow. I went into this expecting a kind of creepy thriller, and while it was creepy, it was also just... profoundly sad? I'm still trying to process everything, tbh. The premise itself is heartbreaking. This man, Elliot Hoover, believes that this little girl, Ivy Templeton, is the reincarnation of his daughter who died like, horribly, in a car accident. And the way he connects with her, the way he's drawn to her... it's unsettling, definitely, but you kinda feel for the guy, too! Marsha Mason as Janice Templeton, the mother, just broke my heart. The sheer terror and protectiveness she had towards Ivy, especially when Elliot started getting more insistent… ugh, I was a MESS. There's this one scene where Ivy is having nightmares and screaming in Hindi (a language she doesn't know!), and Janice is just desperately trying to comfort her... I was sobbing. Seriously, full-on ugly crying. What I wasn't expecting was the courtroom scene near the end. It was intense, and the way they try to get Ivy to relive the trauma was just... too much. My heart was pounding the whole time. Plus, I'm not sure if the movie fully answers all the questions. It leaves you thinking about reincarnation and past lives and whether it's right to mess with someone's present for the sake of a past. IDK. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in, but this has got me feeling so existentially angsty. Has anyone else seen this? What did you guys think? Did it hit you as hard as it hit me? One little gripe I had was the ending felt a little rushed, maybe? I won't spoil anything, but I wish they'd spent a little more time resolving things, especially about what happened to Elliot. Still, overall, it's a really powerful and disturbing movie that's stuck with me way more than I expected. Prepare for some emotional turmoil if you decide to give it a watch.
