Yeehaw! Lucky Luke and the Daltons - a rootin' tootin' good time?
Okay folks, so we had a family movie night last weekend and decided to throw it back with "Lucky Luke: The Ballad of the Daltons" (1978). Now, I remember bits and pieces of the Lucky Luke comics from when I was a kid, but had never seen this movie before. The kids (ages 6 and 9) were a little skeptical at first because it's animated, but they warmed up to it pretty quickly. The basic premise is that the absolutely inept Dalton brothers have to wipe out everyone who sent their uncle to the gallows in order to inherit his fortune. And for some reason, they need Lucky Luke along for the ride? It's a bit of a weird plot, I'll admit! The animation is definitely older-school, which my husband wasn't crazy about, but I thought it added to the charm. I gotta say, the part when the Daltons are trying to figure out how to kill people is hilarious in a dark-comedy sort of way. And honestly, the songs are weirdly catchy. I found myself humming "The Ballad of the Daltons" for like, two days afterwards. So, would I recommend it for a family movie night? Probably! It's goofy, relatively harmless, and keeps the kids entertained. Just be prepared for some old-fashioned cartoon violence (think Wile E. Coyote levels). It's definitely not Pixar-level storytelling, but it's a fun, nostalgic trip. Plus, it was a good conversation starter about different animation styles and how movies have changed over the years. Anyone else seen it? What did you think?
