Rutles: All You Need is Cash - Underrated Soundtrack Gem?
Hey everyone, Hughes here! Been on a real Rutles kick lately, and I'm wondering if anyone else out there appreciates the music in "All You Need Is Cash" as much as I do? I mean, it's a total parody, but the songs are legitimately AMAZING. Neil Innes is a freaking genius. Seriously, "Ouch!" gives me chills every time, even though it's clearly a send-up of "Help!". And "Get Up and Go"? Catchier than the actual Beatles catalog sometimes, haha. I've read that Innes wrote the music before the movie itself was even scripted, which is insane when you realize how perfectly it captures the Beatles' evolution. Does anyone have a favorite Rutles song not in the movie? I'm curious if there are any deep cuts I'm missing. What I find interesting from a score perspective is how they don't rely on straight-up Beatles cues to underline the emotion. Like, during the 'breakup' scenes, instead of a somber "Let It Be" riff, they go for these slightly melancholic, Rutles-esque melodies that are just...chef's kiss. It's subtle but effective. I think it's what keeps it from being just a parody and elevates it to something genuinely special. So yeah, anyone else think the Rutles soundtrack is severely underrated in the overall discussion of great comedy film music? Or am I just a total Ruttlemaniac lost in my own little world? Let me know your thoughts! And any recommendations for similar 'mock rockumentaries' with killer soundtracks would be greatly appreciated!
