Okay, Spiritual Kung Fu is WILD (and kinda perfect for family movie night?)
So, we just watched "Spiritual Kung Fu" with the kiddos and...wow. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was definitely an experience. Jackie Chan's character is like, the ultimate goofy student getting into trouble at the Shaolin Temple. My kids were cracking up at all the silly training montages, especially the one with the buckets of water. The plot is pretty standard 'secret scrolls stolen, revenge needed' kind of stuff, but the execution is just...weird. The best (or maybe the weirdest?) part is when Jackie Chan starts getting fighting tips from these dancing blue ghosts with bright red hair. I mean, WHAT? It's so bizarre, but it's also hilarious. The ghost scenes are so uniquely strange it's hard to look away. My youngest kept asking if they were friendly ghosts, which was actually a really cute moment. Plus, the fight choreography, even with the ghostly assistance, is pure Jackie Chan brilliance. You can tell he was just having a blast filming this. I was a little worried about some of the fight scenes being too intense for the kids, but honestly, it's all so over-the-top and cartoonish that it felt alright. There's no real blood or gore, just a lot of acrobatic fighting. My daughter, who's really into dance, was especially impressed with the way Jackie Chan incorporates different animal styles into his fighting. She’s now running around the house doing her best “snake fist.” Overall, "Spiritual Kung Fu" is a delightfully strange and surprisingly family-friendly martial arts flick. It’s not high art by any means, and the plot is pretty basic, but the sheer wackiness of it, combined with Jackie Chan's charisma, makes it a really fun watch. Just be prepared to answer some questions about blue ghosts afterwards! I'd say it's worth a shot if you're looking for something a little different for family movie night.
