Warlords of Atlantis: Cheesy Fun or Hidden Gem?
Alright action junkies, anyone ever stumble across "Warlords of Atlantis"? I caught it on late-night TV years ago and it's stuck with me. It's got that classic 70s adventure vibe – think a low-budget "James Bond meets Jules Verne" kind of thing. The plot's bonkers: group of explorers looking for Atlantis, get double-crossed, and end up in a city ruled by aliens or something. I'm fuzzy on the details but it's got a whole lot of underwater mayhem. What REALLY grabbed me (and still does) is the old-school special effects. Let's be honest, they're ropey as hell. But there's this charm to seeing actual miniature sets being blown up and guys in rubber suits wrestling. Forget your CGI, this is pure practical stuntwork! There's this one scene where they're fighting these giant octopus things... it's so badly done it's amazing. The Pyramids in the movie appear to be made of cardboard. Good times. I think the director probably wanted to do a Ray Harryhausen type of thing, but with half the budget, lol. I know it's not "Citizen Kane" or anything, but sometimes you just need some cheesy, action-packed fun. There's something about the utter lack of polish that makes it so endearing. No one involved was trying to win an Oscar, they just wanted to create a fun, Saturday afternoon movie. And in that sense, I think they nailed it. So, what are your thoughts? Am I the only one who finds this movie so absurdly enjoyable? Or is it just terrible-bad rather than good-bad? I'm curious if anyone else has seen it, and what they thought. It's definitely a film that deserves a watch (or re-watch).
