Okay, hear me out... Alien is kinda a rom-com?
So, I just watched Alien for the first time (don't @ me, I know, I'm late to the party) and... I have questions. Like, is anyone else getting major 'opposites attract' vibes from Ripley and the Xenomorph? Okay, okay, hear me out before you throw tomatoes. Think about it: she's all by-the-book, rules-oriented, responsible adult. He's... chaotic neutral, lives fast, dies young (kinda), and has zero respect for personal space. And that scene where the Xenomorph bursts out of Kane's chest? Talk about a meet-cute gone wrong! It's like when you accidentally spill coffee all over your crush on the subway, but, y'know, with more acidic blood and less public humiliation. Seriously though, beyond the horror element (which, admittedly, is pretty effective), is there a kinda weird, twisted, dysfunctional love story thing going on here? I'm probably totally off base, but I just can't shake the feeling that there's something almost... endearing? ... about their relationship. Even if it is super toxic. Okay, I'm being ridiculous, I know. But tell me I'm not COMPLETELY insane! Is it just me, or is there a tiny, tiny sliver of a rom-com buried deep, deep down in the guts of Alien? Am I alone in feeling this, or is this the kind of film where you can find something new every time? Let me know if I need to go back to watching Sleepless in Seattle and get my romantic comedy sensibilities recalibrated.
