"Long Weekend" (1979): Nature's Revenge Is a Real Buzzkill (and Kinda Funny?)
Okay, so I stumbled upon this Aussie flick from '79 called "Long Weekend" and, wow, what a trip. It's technically a horror, but honestly, the real horror is just how awful this couple, Peter and Marcia, are to each other...and everything else. They're so incredibly annoying, constantly bickering and carelessly trashing the environment on their camping trip. Like, seriously, who shoots a dang kangaroo for kicks? Total psychopaths. I think I was actually rooting for the nature to win, which says a lot. The movie isn't jump-scare heavy or anything. It's more of a slow burn of escalating weirdness. The animals start acting all aggressive, there's this unsettling sense of being watched, and things just generally go downhill fast. The cinematography is actually pretty good with some cool shots but what I found interesting is how the movie hints at the couple's awful behavior triggering some sort of natural rebellion. The birds divebombing them? The possum getting all bitey? Nature was definitely not happy, and honestly, they kinda had it coming. There were definitely moments where I laughed though, it felt like dark comedy. Peter just constantly misunderstands everything that's happening and keeps doubling down on his terrible decisions. Marcia doesn't fare much better, she's just as selfish and oblivious. The ending, without giving too much away, is appropriately bleak and a little bit ambiguous. All in all, "Long Weekend" is a strange and unsettling film. It's not your typical horror movie, but it definitely gets under your skin. If you're looking for something different and don't mind a slow pace and unlikeable characters, give it a shot (pun intended?). Just promise me you won't go shooting kangaroos afterward!
