Long Weekend (1979): Nature's Revenge or Marriage Counseling?

Okay, so I just finished watching "Long Weekend" (1979), and I'm honestly still processing it. For those who haven't seen it, it's about this intensely dysfunctional couple, Peter and Marcia, who go on a camping trip and basically get terrorized by nature. Birds, snakes, even dolphins are out to get them. But here's my theory: Is the environmental horror actually...a metaphor? Hear me out. Peter and Marcia are AWFUL to each other. They litter, they're disrespectful to the environment, they're just generally unpleasant people. But more than that, they're emotionally abusive to each other. Their communication is atrocious, and their anger is palpable. So, what if the escalating animal attacks are a visual representation of their toxic relationship eating them alive? The eagle that attacks is like their constant bickering, the dying animals they ignore is their neglect of each other's feelings... I mean, when Peter shoots that kangaroo in what he thinks is self-defense but is more likely just a hair-trigger reaction, that felt symbolic of him lashing out unnecessarily at Marcia. I know it's kind of a reach, and I'm probably overthinking it (guilty!), but the movie never really explains WHY nature is attacking them. It's not just random; it's escalating and targeted. It really feels like nature is responding to their inner turmoil. Plus, think about the ending! Without giving too much away, their final fate sort of seals the deal on this whole "relationship as eco-disaster" idea, right? Am I crazy, or does anyone else see it this way? And side note - the kangaroos in this film are nightmare-inducing. Seriously, scarier than any slasher villain I've seen lately. Let me know what you guys think! Is it just a straight-up nature-strikes-back film, or is there a hidden layer of relationship commentary in "Long Weekend?"
