Alright, "Prophecy" (1979) - Anyone else find it unintentionally hilarious?

Okay, so I finally watched "Prophecy" (1979). I went in expecting some decent ecological horror, maybe a little cheesy, but what I got was... something else. The premise itself, about the pollution causing mutations and creating this giant, freaky bear-monster, is pretty solid. But the execution?! Whew. Like, the scene where the kid gets killed in the sleeping bag? Horrifying, yes, but also, the way it's shot and the SOUND EFFECTS... I cackled, I admit it. I felt bad, but I laughed. It's just so over-the-top. And Talia Shire's performance as Maggie... yikes. You can tell she was trying, but she just came across as perpetually stressed out and confused. Maybe that was the point? I don't know. John Hawks' character was quite good, bringing a lot of realism to the Native Americans' plight. I'm curious, though. Did anyone else see potential in the ideas presented? Like, the conflict between environmental protection and economic interests is still super relevant today. The pollution was definitely an issue, and the loggers were shown as greedy and unconcerned about the land. I feel like with a different director and maybe a slightly less ridiculous monster design, this could have been a genuinely impactful film. So, tell me, am I alone in finding "Prophecy" a bizarre mix of genuinely terrifying and unintentionally funny? And does anyone know if the book it's based on (if there is one) is any better? I'm almost afraid to look it up!
