Okay, "The Changeling" (1980) - Anyone Else TERRIFIED?
So I finally watched "The Changeling" from 1980 last night because I kept seeing it pop up on those 'scariest movies ever' lists. I know, I know, old news for some of you! But I'm always on the lookout for stuff that isn't TOO over the top, you know? Something atmospheric that won't give my kids nightmares if they accidentally wander in while I'm watching. And honestly... it's creeping me out! Like, seriously unsettling. Not a ton of gore, but the whole vibe is just... wrong. Specifically, I'm wondering if anyone else found the séance scene as disturbing as I did? That ball bouncing down the stairs? Ugh. And the bathtub scene later on? I watched alone and almost had to turn on all the lights, lol! Also that Christopher Plummer character, is he supposed to be a red herring? He was nice in 'The Sound of Music!' Anyways, I kept waiting for it to make sense, but it stayed so weird. And the ending... felt so ambiguous. Like, did justice really get served? Mostly, I want to know if other people felt this movie was as effective without relying on jump scares (or heavy special effects, for its time?) as some of the more modern horrors. Or am I just a scaredy cat? Anyone have thoughts about the movie's themes re: class and inherited guilt? I'm a bit stumped. Let me know!
