Okay, "Bad Timing" (1980) - Obsession Overload or Just Bad Luck?
Okay, rom-com lovers, throw on your thinking caps because I just finished watching "Bad Timing" (1980), and... whoa. This isn't your typical meet-cute, fall-in-love, live-happily-ever-after kinda deal. It's dark. Like, lurking-in-a-Vienna-alleyway-at-midnight dark. We've got Alex Linden (Harvey Keitel), a psychiatrist who's clearly got some issues, and Milena Flaherty (Theresa Russell), this free-spirited, kinda chaotic young woman. Their dynamic is... unsettling, to say the least. I mean, the age gap alone already made me raise an eyebrow, but the power imbalance?? Yikes. What I'm really scratching my head over is Milena's agency. Like, does she ACTUALLY like Alex, or is she just drawn to the danger and intensity? There's this one scene, I think it's after they fight at the club, and she's all vulnerable and needy with him, but then five minutes later she's giving him the cold shoulder. Then there is the whole cop subplot is just weird, and I can't tell if it has anything to do with Alex or if it is just to add another layer of drama. And Alex! Ugh. Is he just a total creep or is he genuinely blinded by some kind of twisted, obsessive "love"? The way he stalks her, watches her... it's seriously disturbing. I'm trying to figure out if the movie is trying to say something about the dangers of obsession, or if it's just glorifying toxic relationships. Thoughts, anyone? Am I missing something here, or is "Bad Timing" just a really, really uncomfortable viewing experience?
