"La Chèvre" - The Peak of French Slapstick Absurdity?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "La Chèvre" (The Goat). I'd heard it mentioned a few times in connection to other French comedies, especially anything with Pierre Richard. Man, that dude is just next level clumsy. Seriously, if Murphy's Law had a human face, it'd be his. The premise alone is hilarious: a businessman's daughter is super unlucky and keeps getting into weird accidents, so they hire another unlucky guy, Campana (Richard), hoping he'll recreate her path and they'll find her. 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,' I guess? But, like, 'flattery' in the form of pratfalls. Depardieu as the tough private investigator, Meyer, COMPLETELY sells it. He's so exasperated the entire time –- the scenes where he's trying to deduce what Campana is going to do next based on the daughter's previous mishaps are gold. The bit with the revolving door? Pure genius. It's the kind of humor where it's so unbelievably stupid, it circles back around to being brilliant. "We'll always have Paris," but we also have Campana getting stuck in various ridiculous situations in Mexico. That said, it's definitely a product of its time. Some of the humor hasn’t aged perfectly, and the plot is pretty thin. You're not watching it for the plot, though, you're watching it for the sheer physical comedy and the dynamic between Richard and Depardieu. "Go ahead, make my day," doesn't really apply here. Meyer's day is constantly being ruined by Campana's sheer ineptitude and it's amazing. Overall, if you’re into French comedies and don’t mind some dated sensibilities, "La Chèvre" is worth checking out. Just go in expecting silly, broad humor and you'll have a good time. Make sure your seatbelts are fastened, 'cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
