"48 Hrs." - Underneath the Gritty Exterior, There's...Bromance? (Hear Me Out!)

Okay, so I just rewatched "48 Hrs." for the first time in ages. I know, I know, it's like, the quintessential buddy cop movie, all gritty 80s vibes and Eddie Murphy being hilarious. But I started thinking... is it secretly a rom-com? Like, a super-macho, violent rom-com where the romance is subtext? Stay with me! Think about it: The whole plot hinges on Nick Nolte's Jack Cates needing Reggie Hammond (Murphy). They're forced together, initially hate each other's guts (that diner scene??), but have to learn to rely on each other. You've got bickering, shared adversity, even a dance scene (sort of, if you squint at the cowboy bar). It's all there, just repackaged with shootouts and racial slurs that definitely haven't aged well, let's be real. I mean, Cates literally risks his career and reputation for this guy! Also, what's with all the closeups of them staring intensely at each other in moments of peril lol. Like, when they're cornered in the alley? The tension is palpable! No, seriously, you can practically feel the unspoken feelings, even if they're aggressively heteronormative ones. Maybe I'm reading too much into it because I need some romantic validation in my life, but it's kinda there right? Anyway, just a thought. And btw, I still think it's a really good movie, but now I have some questions. Maybe it's just the way Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte play off each other, so many classic comedy duos are all about relationships too. Thoughts? Am I projecting hardcore or does anyone else see the (very, very deeply) buried romance?
