OMG, "The Entity" - Anyone Else Seriously Messed Up By This One?!
Okay, horror freaks, I just rewatched "The Entity" (1982) and I'm still reeling. I know it's got some mixed reviews, and yeah, maybe it's a bit dated visually. But the idea of it? The absolute helplessness Barbara Hershey portrays? It's seriously chilling. I'm not usually one for 'haunted house' type stuff, but the fact that it's an INVISIBLE entity... that's just next level terrifying! What I don't understand is the psychiatrist's reaction. I mean, REALLY?! You're telling me that EVERY single bruise, every single terrorized reaction from her kids is all just coming from repressed childhood trauma? I know Freud was all the rage back then (and some shrink still stick to that stuff), but come ON! Did anyone else want to just reach through the screen and shake that dude? I get that they were trying to create that element of doubt, make you wonder if she's truly losing it, or if something supernatural is the core of this dilemma, but still.... frustrating! Seriously, though, the scene where she's attacked in the shower? I almost couldn't watch. It's so intense and visceral. I think the director (whoever they were, LOL) really nailed the feeling of violation and powerlessness. But here's my question: Do you think the movie does a good job of balancing the 'is she crazy?' angle with the supernatural horror, or does it lean too heavily into one side? I'm kinda torn, and I'd love to hear what y'all think. Maybe I'm just too easily creeped out. Haha! I need other opinions! Also, if you know similar movies to this, please give me some recommendations!! I need more films that blend the psychological with the supernatural (but no cheap jump scares only!!).
