Ace of Aces: More Than Just a Funny Airplane Movie?

Okay, so the other night the kids were asleep (finally!) and I was flipping through channels and landed on "Ace of Aces" starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. I remembered my dad watching it all the time when I was younger, but I never really got it. It seemed like a silly, over-the-top action comedy, right? A boxer rescuing Jewish kids in Nazi Germany? It's a bit... much. But watching it now, as a parent, something else struck me. Sure, the slapstick and the crazy stunts are there (Belmondo was fearless!), but the moments with Simon and the other children are actually pretty poignant. Jo Cavalier kinda accidentally becomes their protector, and he takes it seriously. He risks his neck, not for glory or money, but just to do the right thing. There's that scene where he first meets Simon on the train, and then later, knowing what's coming, still chooses to help him? It's surprisingly touching. It makes you think about how ordinary people can find themselves in extraordinary circumstances and rise to the occasion. I know it's easy to dismiss action comedies with a very thin plot, and the movie is pretty silly sometimes, and I'm not claiming it's some deep historical commentary, but I think there's a deeper message about the importance of standing up for what's right, even when it's hard. And I think it's a good conversation starter with older kids about courage and empathy, even if they mostly just want to see the airplane stunts! Anyone else felt this way, or am I overthinking it? I do that sometimes ;)
