Still of the Night: Brook is sus af, anyone else think so?
Okay, so I just watched "Still of the Night" (1982) and I'm totally hung up on Brook Reynolds, played by Meryl Streep. Hear me out, because I think she's way more involved in the murder than the movie lets on. Like, obviously, the whole film is built on suspense and throwing suspicion on everyone, but Brook's behavior just SCREAMS guilty to me. The way she shows up at Dr. Rice's office, all mysterious and flirty after the patient is offed? Red flag alert! And then there's that scene at the auction with the painting where she starts acting all possessive and giving him the cold shoulder. It doesn't feel natural at all. It's like she's purposely trying to manipulate his feelings. My theory is that she knew way more about the victim's shady dealings (art thievery, amirite?) than she initially admitted, and maybe she even had a hand in eliminating him to cover her own something up. I mean, the movie kinda hints at it, but I'd have loved for it to go full-on twist ending where she was revealed as the mastermind. Another thing that bothers me is the dream sequences. Are we supposed to take them AT face value? Or are they Rice's subconsciousness piecing together the truth about Brook? Honestly, I think the movie is intentionally vague, which is both frustrating and kinda cool, in a way. It lets your imagination run wild. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I'm dying to know if I'm just totally off my rocker here, or if others were picking up on the same vibe I was getting from Streep's character. And the ending...was definitely a choice. lol. Felt kinda rushed? But the lingering question of Brook's real intentions is what has stuck with me the most. That's gotta be worth something. Would you guys consider it a neo-noir?? Gimme some recommendations in the same vein if ya have any.
