"Breathless" (1983): A Bonnie & Clyde Dream or Something Darker?
Okay, horror hounds, jessmovienerd back at ya! I just re-watched "Breathless" with Richard Gere (swoon, even bad boy Gere!) and, I gotta say, it's messed with my head more than I remembered. It's not straight-up horror, obvs, but the atmosphere is pure dread fuel. I mean, Jesse's a total dirtbag, right? Stealing cars, accidentally killing a cop... but then Monica (Valérie Kaprisky) falls for him? Like, REALLY falls for him? Here's where my theory kicks in. I think Monica is way more disturbed than she lets on. Hear me out: she's OBSESSED with Silver Surfer comics. She's constantly quoting them. What if she's not just a quirky French chick, but actually living in a fantasy world where Jesse is some kind of doomed comic book hero? Like, she consciously chooses to ignore all the glaring red flags because it fits her pre-set narrative. The scene where she's painting his face? Totally performative, totally delusional… and kinda creepy. Maybe she subconsciously wants the whole thing to end tragically because that's what makes the story 'perfect' in her mind. Does that make sense? And that ending? Ugh. So bleak! Jesse thinks he's dying a hero, misunderstood by everyone, betrayed by his love. But what if he's just a pawn in Monica's twisted game? The way she denies knowing him at the end...it's not just self-preservation, I think she's already rewriting their story in her head. Ugh, its stuck with me for days, it messed with my sleep schedule for real. I'm not saying she plotted the whole thing from the beginning, but I think her mental state definitely influenced the outcome. Like, maybe she didn't directly kill him, but she created the conditions for his demise. I dunno, maybe I'm reading too much into it. What do you guys think? Am I alone in seeing this sorta Fatal Attraction vibe coming off of Monica or am I crazy?
