"Curse of the Pink Panther" - Did They REALLY Need To Make This?

Okay, so last night, the kids were tucked in (after a very dramatic reading of "Goodnight Moon", thanks, toddlers!) and my husband and I thought, hey, let's revisit some 'classic' comedies. We landed on "Curse of the Pink Panther" (1983). Now, I grew up on the Pink Panther movies, loving Peter Sellers. But...this one. Whew. It's... something. I honestly felt bad for Ted Wass. He was trying so hard as Clifton Sleigh, the 'world's worst detective,' and he really did have some funny moments, like when he's trying to impersonate all the different characters, but it just felt flat overall. David Niven's in it, but clearly wasn't well, and his scenes were mostly comprised of recycled footage. It's weird and a little sad. And then there's Roger Moore, who is hilarious for all of five minutes. Honestly, his cameo was maybe my favorite part, even though he's pretending to be Clouseau! What I think I missed most of all was the Clouseau character himself -- the physical comedy, the sheer genius of Peter Sellers playing a lovable idiot -- just wasn't there. I almost wish they had just left it alone. It's definitely one of those movies that makes you think, 'Okay, maybe some things should be left in the past.' Has anyone else felt this way about a sequel/reboot of a beloved movie? Maybe I'm just being too harsh. Thoughts? Anyway, next movie night? We're definitely going with something more reliable. Thinking maybe "Singin' in the Rain"...can't really go wrong with Gene Kelly, right?
