Ghostbusters (1984) - Underrated Comedy Genius? What did you think?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching the original Ghostbusters (1984) - yeah, I know, late to the party! As someone who generally prefers more… contemplative cinema (hello, Ozu!), I wasn't sure it would be my thing. But wow, I was surprised! The special effects are obviously pretty dated now, but the humor totally holds up. I actually laughed out loud quite a few times, which is rare for me with American comedies, I gotta be honest. I was particularly struck by how effortlessly funny Bill Murray is as Peter Venkman. Like, is he even trying? The scene where he's testing the psychic abilities of the students with the electric shocks? Hilarious! And Dan Aykroyd is just so earnest as Ray Stantz, you can't help but love him. I did find some of the pacing a little slow in the middle act, but the ending with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was so iconic, even I knew about it before seeing the movie. Plus, the theme song is stuck in my head now! My question is, do you think this movie is actually a really clever satire, or is it just a goofy, fun romp? I'm leaning towards satire, especially with the whole commentary on the absurdity of bureaucracy and academic institutions. Also, anyone else find Sigourney Weaver’s performance as Dana Barrett super compelling? She totally sells the possession thing. Maybe it is genius, after all? Anyway, just wondering what other international film lovers thought. Is this a guilty pleasure, or something more? Worth re-watching or just a one-time deal? Lay it on me!
