Ghostbusters (1984) - Cinematography Actually Genius?
Okay film nerds, cinephile_sarah here, needing to pick your brains! I just rewatched Ghostbusters (1984) and while I know it's a comedy classic, I was really paying attention to the visuals this time. Like, how did Reitman (just found out he directed it, oops!) make something so silly look so GOOD?! Specifically, I'm thinking about the scene when they first enter Dana's apartment and encounter Zuul. The lighting is this perfect blend of creepy and theatrical, and the way the camera slowly pans up to the creature emerging from the temple... genius! And all those close-ups on Sigourney Weaver’s face as she transforms? Chilling. I think it's easy to write it off because it's a comedy, but the way the cinematography builds suspense is seriously impressive. So, am I the only one who thinks the visual language in Ghostbusters is totally underrated? Are there other scenes that stand out to you guys in terms of the direction/cinematography? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Maybe I'm just overanalyzing a childhood favorite, but I genuinely think there's more to it than just proton packs and slime.
