Gremlins: Still Holds Up (Mostly!)

Okay, so I just rewatched "Gremlins" for the first time in ages, and wow, it's still pretty wild. For those who somehow don't know, it's about Billy, who gets a Mogwai named Gizmo (cutest thing EVER), and then promptly breaks the rules – no bright lights, no water, and NEVER feed him after midnight. Naturally, chaos ensues. Honestly, Gizmo is perfection. I'd die for him. But the movie gets seriously dark pretty fast, right? Like, seeing the Gremlins wreak havoc is funny at first (the bar scene is iconic!), but then things get genuinely creepy, especially that microwave scene. I still kinda shield my eyes. What I appreciate is that it's so different from a lot of family films, it doesn't shy away from a darker humor and some honestly scary moments. I also found myself really noticing Kate Beringer's monologue about Christmas and her dad this time, so sad. It's a weirdly complex movie for something about monster mayhem! I will say though, some of the special effects definitely look dated. Some of the Gremlins movements are laughably janky now. And while I love Phoebe Cates, her acting is a little...wooden at times. But overall, the story is so unique and the Gremlins themselves are so memorable, it's easy to overlook those flaws. Gremlins is a fun & scary ride! Quick question for anyone else who's seen it recently: am I the only one who finds it a little weird that everyone's okay with Billy keeping Gizmo at the end after everything that happened?? Like, isn't that kinda irresponsible, knowing the potential for disaster? Just me? Okay then...
