Amadeus: Overhyped or Nah?
Okay, so I finally caved and watched Amadeus. Everyone and their grandma seems to think it's the GOAT, right? But honestly, I'm sitting here scratching my head. Yeah, the costumes are pretty, and the music is...well, it's Mozart, so obviously it's good. But the whole movie just felt long. And Salieri? I get that he's supposed to be sympathetic, but I just found him whiny. All that 'God why didn't you choose me' nonsense got old real quick. Maybe I'm just heartless, but boo-hoo, dude. Plenty of people are decent at things without being the absolute best. And Mozart himself? Annoying! I know they portray him as this immature genius, but that high-pitched giggle? Drove me up the wall. I get it, contrast, blah blah blah, but honestly, a little subtlety would have gone a long way. The death scene was well-acted, I'll give them that. But the whole 'dictating the Requiem' thing felt overly dramatic. I dunno, maybe I'm just missing something. Everyone raves about how this movie 'captures the essence of genius,' but to me, it felt more like a really long, kinda boring soap opera with powdered wigs. Anyone else feel this way, or am I doomed to be eternally uncultured? Plus, I gotta say. Why the heck is Tom Hulce, an American, playing Mozart? Seems like a weird choice. Couldn't they find a European actor? Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, just...not the earth-shattering cinematic experience everyone made it out to be. Give me a good Kurosawa flick any day. At least those have samurai battles.
