Wax On, Style On: My 'The Karate Kid' (1984) Costume Obsessions

Okay, so I just rewatched "The Karate Kid" (the OG, obvi) and I'm officially obsessed, again. But this time, mostly with the clothes. I mean, the plot is cute and all, but let's be real, it's the 80s fashion that really wins. Ali's wardrobe? Total goals. That preppy-meets-SoCal cool vibe is everything. Remember that yellow polo she wears at Golf N' Stuff? I need it. Then when she goes to the pool with Daniel, she wears this red bathing suit dress with white polka dots. Amazing! Simple, but so put together. Even the Cobra Kai dojo outfits are iconic in a supremely dorky-cool kinda way. And speaking of Daniel, his whole 'new kid in town' aesthetic is actually pretty endearing. Kind of basic, but he makes it work. I loved when he gets that skeleton costume for the Halloween dance? Pretty cool and creepy at the same time. But ngl, sometimes I felt bad for him when he had to wear that old-school Karate suit for the tournament. It looked a little small on him, honestly. That headband though? A classic. Miyagi's clothes are simple, but they really fit his character. That traditional Japanese style has such a calming effect. I'm also wondering if the characters chose the locations of the movie based on its color palette. The contrast of bright, sunny beaches of California with the drab, almost sepia-toned surroundings of Mr. Miyagi's house. What do you guys think? Did the movie need a costume/location refresh? Anyways, I could go on and on. I highly recommend giving "The Karate Kid" another watch, but this time, pay attention to the fashion. You won't regret it. Plus, it's a fun little nostalgic trip back to a time when fashion was all about bold colors and even bolder hairstyles. What's your favorite look from the movie?
