Beverly Hills Cop - anyone else notice the Eddie Murphy magic?
Okay, so I've seen Beverly Hills Cop, like, a million times. It's one of those movies I just keep coming back to. I know the jokes, I know the plot, but I always find something new. This time, I was really focusing on how Eddie Murphy just… owns every scene. It's not just the jokes, it's the way he improvises and just completely disarms people. Like, the scene where he's trying to get into the art gallery pretending to be a delivery guy? Pure gold. I swear, half of that had to be ad-libbed, right? But what I'm really wondering is, did anyone else notice how seamlessly he blends in, even though he's SO out of place? Like, Axel is clearly not a Beverly Hills type of guy, but somehow he manages to manipulate everyone – the cops, the hotel staff, even freaking Victor Maitland. It's like he's got this superpower of persuasion, all powered by his fast-talking and quick thinking. It's like, does anyone else think that he's doing some kind of subtle method acting to get in the character's head? It always felt so real. Speaking of Maitland (Steven Berkoff, amazing btw!), I'm curious about the specifics of his art dealing. They make it seem like a front for drug smuggling, but they never REALLY spell it out, do they? I mean, is he just buying cheap art, marking it up insanely, and laundering money, or is there something more sinister going on? I always kind of wondered if the detail in the art plots were just throwaway things to tie it to the drugs. Maybe I'm overthinking it... Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else shared my Eddie Murphy/Axel Foley obsession and had any insights! What are your favorite little details or hidden gems in this movie?
