Axel F! My Man from the 80s Strikes Again
Okay, so I just finished another late-night viewing of Beverly Hills Cop (1984!). I know, I know, it's like, the millionth time, but what can I say? Eddie Murphy in his absolute prime is like, cinematic comfort food. I think what holds this movie up SO well is how genuinely funny it is. Not just, like, chuckle funny, but actual laugh-out-loud, 'wake the neighbors' funny. I forgot how many quotable lines this flick has. Like, the whole hotel scene with Serge? Genius. 'A banana in your tailpipe?!' Comedy GOLD. And Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood is so wonderfully awkward and out of his depth. I always feel for him, even though he's, you know, kinda dumb. The whole contrast between Axel's street smarts and the Beverly Hills police force's by-the-book approach is just chef's kiss. Plus, the soundtrack is straight fire. 'Neutron Dance' is forever stuck in my head now. The action also holds up pretty well. The shootout towards the end is pretty intense, honestly, considering the overall comedic tone. But you know, I always wonder, like, how did Axel manage to wreck so much stuff and basically get away with everything unscathed? Suspension of disbelief, I guess haha. Taggart and Rosewood were pretty forgiving. Also, Jenny Summers. I knew she looked familiar, turns out she was in Coming to America!! Mind blown. Anyway, yeah, still a total classic. I probably need to watch the sequels... eventually. Def worth rewatching if you need a pick-me-up or just want some pure '80s nostalgia.
