Axel Foley's Charm: Still Holds Up?
Okay, so I just re-watched Beverly Hills Cop for maybe the millionth time (don't judge!). And I have to ask, does Eddie Murphy's performance as Axel Foley still resonate with everyone else? I mean, the plot is pretty straightforward '80s action, but it's really Foley's energy that carries the whole film, right? That scene where he's bullshitting his way into the art gallery, pretending to be a famous art critic... pure gold. You can see in the other actor's faces they ARE impressed. I think that's so brilliant. But here's what I'm wondering: is it just nostalgia goggles, or is there something genuinely special about how Murphy embodied that character? Like, could anyone else have pulled off the same level of chaotic-good charm? I'm trying to imagine someone else stepping into those shoes and I just can't. His comedic timing, the improvisational feel... it's almost like he became Axel Foley. And let's be honest, the movie is absolutely ridiculous! The pacing is crazy and all over the place. But somehow, it all works because you're so invested in Foley's journey and, honestly, because he's kinda hot, lol. Plus, I love Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as his reluctant sidekicks - their reactions to Foley's crazy antics are priceless. So, what do you think? Is it just pure nostalgia, or is Eddie Murphy's performance as Axel Foley truly iconic and timeless? And if so, what exactly makes it so damn good? I'm genuinely curious to hear your thoughts!
