Obsession (1976): Underrated De Palma or am I missing something?

Okay, so I just watched "Obsession" (1976), finally got around to it after hearing it was kinda De Palma's homage to Vertigo. And yeah, the parallels are definitely there. That scene in Florence, ugh, so creepy and beautiful all at once. Lithgow's character, Robert LaSalle, is such a slimeball, you know he's up to something nefarious, but the mystery keeps you hanging on. Plus, Cliff Robertson's performance as Michael Courtland really sold me on the grief and obsession, even if it got a little...much. But here's my thing: while visually stunning (seriously, the score and cinematography are top-notch!), I’m wondering if the plot's a bit...thin? Like, the grand conspiracy felt a tad underdeveloped for the amount of emotional weight they were trying to throw around. Maybe it's because Vertigo already tackled similar themes with such incredible depth. I kinda wished they'd leaned more into the psychological aspect of Michael's grief and how it warped his perception, maybe even throw in some more world-building around the New Orleans setting - that coulda been cool. So, am I totally off base here? Did anyone else feel like "Obsession" was beautiful but ultimately missing a crucial layer to elevate it from "really good" to truly great? What did you guys think about the ending? I felt like it kinda rushed it, but I could be wrong. Tell me your thoughts! I'm ready to be convinced either way. This is a film I want to love, and I'm wondering if I'm missing someting that would push me over the edge. Also, kinda a random thought, but did anyone else get a weird vibe from the whole Italian opera house setting? It felt like they could've built a whole mini-world just around that location alone! So much potential for deeper storytelling there, maybe some history baked in, you know? Sci-fi nerd brain always working, even on non-sci-fi movies, haha.
