Burnt Offerings: Am I the only one who thinks...?
Okay, alright, settle down everyone because I'm about to say something that might get me crucified. I just watched "Burnt Offerings" (again) and while everyone's busy wetting themselves over the 'creepy house' and Karen Black's eyebrows, I think we're missing the point. Or maybe I'M missing the point, but I really doubt it. Here's my batshit theory: The house isn't evil. The Allardyce family creates the evil. Seriously, think about it. Oliver, the kid, is a straight-up sociopath from the start. Notice how eager he is to drown that old woman? And Marian? She's teetering on the edge of a complete mental breakdown before they even pull up to the property. Ben is the only 'normal' one, and what happens? He descends into paranoid madness trying to 'protect' them. The house just amplifies what's already there. It's like a catalyst. Everyone focuses on the caretaker, Rozonov, and the heating system. But I’m thinking Rozonov is less a supernatural entity and more just… a really, really shady dude. Like, who hires a caretaker who constantly stares blankly and refuses to talk? It's not his fault Marian becomes obsessed with feeding him. It's not his fault Ben's stress turns him into a monster. They are all broken beforehand, and the house essentially gives them a 'reason' to act out and be insane. Maybe that's just me. I just find it hard to believe in solely "evil houses." Seems lazy. Give me a good, broken family any day, and then throw in a weird house... that's where the real horror lies. You know, the kind that could actually exist. And tbh the pool scene is kinda cheesy... just sayin'.
