Rolling Thunder: I think I know what the clothes are hinting at...

Okay, so I just watched Rolling Thunder. Brutal, right? Lee Marvin is iconic, no question, but I'm always looking at the fashion, darlings. And the clothes are SCREAMING storytelling. Hear me out. Specifically, look at Charles Rane's (Marvin) wardrobe. He comes back from Vietnam, and he's immediately put in this stiff suit, right? It’s supposed to be nice, this hero’s welcome, but it looks SO wrong on him. Like he's playing dress-up, or he's being suffocated. It's like the clothes are representing society trying to box him back into a role that just doesn't fit anymore. Then, he’s mostly in jeans and a kind of generic tan jacket throughout the rest of the movie, like he's trying to find some kind of uniform to replace the one he lost, but it never quite works. He's always uncomfortable, you can just see it. It's like he's stripped of any real identity. And then there's Linda, the pizza girl. She’s stuck in that waitress outfit the whole time, and her look kind of mirrors Rane's in a weird way, she's also stuck in something that defines her but doesn't reflect her. She's so clearly infatuated with Rane and wanting something more, but the damn uniform is holding her back or defining her in a way she can't get past. I think that costuming choice is there so she can mirror his character too. So sad, but realistic. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think the clothes are saying that these characters are trapped, both by circumstance and by the expectations placed on them. It’s like their clothes become these visual symbols of their inner turmoil. I don't know, what do you guys think? Am I just seeing things?
