Anyone else notice how sad and dated the clothes are in Rolling Thunder?
Okay, so I just watched Rolling Thunder. Intense, right? Like, the whole thing is bleak, but I was also really struck by how… old everything looked, even for 1977. I'm not just talking about the sets (though those were pretty depressing small-town Texas vibes). It's the clothes! Like, when Charles Rane comes home, everyone's wearing these drab, ill-fitting things. Even Linda Haynes, who's usually so effortlessly cool, is stuck in these shapeless dresses and, oh god, the hair. It just adds to the whole 'this guy is totally out of step with the modern world' feeling, but it's almost too much, you know? I wonder if it was intentional, like a commentary on how the world moved on while he was stuck in Vietnam, or if it was just the style at the time and I'm totally judging a bygone era, haha. And Whiskey - Tommy Lee Jones - his wardrobe kinda kills me. The tight jeans, the denim jacket... it's supposed to be badass, but kinda comes off like a sad dad trying to be cool. Thoughts? Was this like... accurate for the time and their social class? Or was it a stylistic choice to add to the overall feeling of decay and disillusionment? Maybe the director just had a bad stylist?! Lol. Curious what you guys think!
