Okay, "Wizards" (1977) is... Something Else!
So, I finally got around to watching "Wizards" after seeing it pop up on a few "weird animation" lists. Wow. Just... wow. The animation style is definitely unique, almost like someone took a bunch of tarot cards and made them fight. But I gotta talk about the costumes... or, well, the lack thereof in some places, lol. I mean, Eldar has some seriously cool robes and that pointed hat is EVERYTHING, very whimsical and wizard-y. Blackwolf, on the other hand, seems to be going for the 'dominatrix overlord' look with the metal and spikes? Not sure how practical that is for wizarding, but hey, it's a look. What I did find really fascinating was the juxtaposition of medieval fantasy clothing with the old WWII footage Blackwolf incorporates. Seeing those old military uniforms and tanks juxtaposed against swords was a really interesting visual choice that I don't think other films are doing. It really heightened the bizarreness of the film. I also think that Weehawk's design was really good (the elf). He seemed like a good contrast to some of the darker characters, and really added to some of the plot points within the film. Honestly, the plot itself was a little... out there. Like, a good kind of out there, but out there nonetheless. It's a bit disjointed, but the visuals more than make up for it, especially if you've been watching the film for the costumes or something. Overall, I'd say it's worth a watch if you're into cult classics or just want to see something truly original. Just don't expect a perfectly coherent narrative, haha! Also, someone needs to tell me where I can find fabric like Eldar's robes. Seriously, that stuff looks divine. Maybe I'll try some draping this weekend, who knows!
