Reruns reveal! Still catching new jokes in Police Academy
Okay, so I've seen Police Academy (1984 obvs) like, a billion times. It's pure 80s gold, I can't help it. But every single time I watch it, I notice something new! This time, I was really paying attention to the sound effects. Like, the squeaky noises when Hightower picked up that car? They are ridiculously over the top, but somehow it makes it even funnier. And the whole scene where he is calmly trying to pay for gas after... I almost choked on my soda. How did that guy not freak out more? Also, has anyone else noticed how much Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait) kind of steals the show in the sequels? I know he isn't in this first one much, but just the seeds of his manic energy are there, even just yelling random stuff on the street. It's brilliant casting. I really think the writers must have known he'd be comedy dynamite down the line to bring him back. Lassard, of course, is a national treasure and always will be. The fishbowl. Nuff said. But seriously, how many takes do you think it took to get him to do that scene straight faced? And the whole Magnuson's Sporting Goods incident, like they got away with so much back then, lol! I wonder if they could even make a movie like this today? I think the world needs another Police Academy, tbh! Anyway, just some random thoughts from my latest viewing. Anyone else discover a new appreciation for the sound design, or notice something I missed? Let me know! :)
