"Animal" (1977) - Belmondo's Stunt Double...IS HIM?!?!
Okay, so I watched Animal (1977) last night...again. Belmondo, Raquel Welch, pure 70s action-comedy cheese. But something hit me this time around, and I need to throw it out there. We all know Belmondo did a lot of his own stunts, right? It's part of his charm. But what IF...the movie's playing with the idea that Mike (Belmondo's character) isn't JUST a stuntman, but basically immortal or, like, destined to do these insane feats. Think about it. The film throws these crazy stunts at him, right from the wedding day. And yeah, it's played for laughs, but he keeps surviving stuff that should absolutely kill a normal dude. Like, the airplane scene? Come on. And then the car chases… it's almost like the universe NEEDS him to do these stunts. My theory is, it's not just about Belmondo being Belmondo, it's a meta-commentary on his own persona as this daredevil actor. It becomes part of the movie, even. Maybe the 'Animal' isn't just a nickname, but a hint at some primal, unstoppable force within him. It explains why Jane's so exasperated but also...into it? She KNOWS he's a walking disaster, but he always pulls through, like some weird form of predestination. I know it's a stretch, but I can't get it out of my head. I think it adds a layer deeper than just 'fun action movie', even if it's accidental on the filmmaker's part. One last thing, I think someone should check what his stunt doubles were paid. Surely, nothing? Unless they are the real animals...
