L'Animal (1977) - Belmondo being Belmondo, but what's up with the direction?
Okay, so I just finished watching L'Animal (1977). Belmondo's doing his usual daredevil thing, Raquel Welch is, well, Raquel Welch, and the whole thing is just...silly. Like, aggressively silly. And I'm usually down for some good old-fashioned Belmondo-style action-comedy, especially when he's playing both a suave leading man and a bumbling doofus. But I'm kind of struggling with this one. I'm trying to track down a director for this one cause I couldn't find him (or her) ANYWHERE. Which is weird. Anyway, the comedic beats feel...off. Like, the pratfalls are there, the witty banter is (sometimes) there, but the overall pacing feels really inconsistent. Some scenes drag, others are over too quickly. The whole wedding stunt scene at the beginning is a good example - visually impressive, sure, but the buildup felt rushed and the payoff wasn't as funny as it should have been. Am I missing something? Is this just a case of the director not really knowing what to do with Belmondo's comedic energy, or is there some other context I'm missing? I'm used to director-less films being... well... bad. But this is more like it could have been good? It's giving me the ick, but not in a "Oh, I hated it" way. More of a "Oh, this could be something great, but it isn't". Any thoughts? And seriously, if anyone knows who directed this, let me know. My filmography spreadsheet is screaming at me.
