Okay, 'Animal' with Belmondo...What Was That Ending?!?

Yo, Tylerwatches here, back after diving into another "classic" per your recommendations. This time it was 'Animal' (1977) with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Raquel Welch. Dude, Belmondo is a LEGEND, I get it now. The guy's fearless doing his own stunts. The car chase scenes alone were bonkers. Raquel Welch looked fantastic, obviously, but honestly, I was more impressed with Belmondo's physicality. The gorilla suit thing was kinda weird though, not gonna lie. Felt very...dated? Anyway... So, the whole setup is he's a stuntman about to marry Welch's character, but has to do this crazy stunt on their wedding day. Typical complications ensue, right? Lots of slapstick humor, some wild chases, and Belmondo being charmingly ridiculous. But the ending? Man, the ending COMPLETELY threw me. Spoilers ahead, obviously! He chooses to run off with the actress instead of marrying Jane?? What?! Like, the whole movie built up their relationship (however superficially) and then BAM, nope, he's ditching her for…basically just because? My theory (and it's a half-baked one, bear with me): I think the ending is supposed to be a meta-commentary on stuntmen, you know? Like, they're so used to living on the edge, chasing thrills, that commitment and stability are just...boring to them? Maybe Mike couldn't settle down, he needed the constant drama? Or maybe it was just a poorly written ending. I honestly can't tell. It just felt so abrupt and unearned after all the craziness they went through to get married. Anyone else see this and feel the same way? Am I missing something? Is there some deep French New Wave subtext I'm not getting? Let me know your thoughts! I'm gonna go rewatch some of those car chases now, 'cause those were genuinely insane.
