Belmondo's "Animal" - Underrated Gem or Just Plain Cheesy Fun?
Alright, GenX crew, moviebuff_marc chiming in. I just re-watched "Animal" (1977) with Belmondo and Raquel Welch, and man, it's a total time capsule. Belmondo's a stuntman, Welch is his girl, and chaos ensues. Think "Smokey and the Bandit" but with more explosions and a healthy dose of European goofiness. Anyone else remember catching this on late-night TV back in the day? Okay, so the plot is thinner than a VHS tape after too many viewings. But Belmondo's physical comedy? Still holds up. That scene where he's got like six different girls chasing him at once? Pure slapstick gold. And Raquel Welch, let's be honest, she was a goddess back then. The whole thing feels like a live-action cartoon, but in a good way. Its no "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when it comes to action/adventure but there are similarities in the stunts. I know it's not high art or anything, but "Animal" is just pure, unadulterated fun. It's got the '70s vibe cranked up to eleven. Plus, Belmondo's so charismatic you can't help but enjoy it. Anyone else have fond memories of this one, or am I just showing my age? I am getting old. Time to schedule a colonoscopy. Plus, no woke agenda to be found. Gotta love it. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't want to see Belmondo beat up a bunch of bad guys and get the girl? It's simple, stupid, and gloriously entertaining. Maybe I'm just blinded by nostalgia, but I still think it's worth a watch if you need a good laugh.
