Okay, Sixteen Candles: Still Holds Up (Mostly?)

So, we just watched Sixteen Candles for like, the millionth time lol. I know, I know, it's problematic now, but hear me out! I still love it for the nostalgia. Molly Ringwald is just so relatable as Samantha. Like, who HASN'T had a crush on a guy who's totally out of their league? Except Jake Ryan is kinda a jerk, let's be real. The scene where he's waiting for her at the end is cute, but also, dude was totally leading her on, ugh. And don't even get me STARTED on Long Duk Dong... seriously, cringefest. Like, I get it was the 80s but still! It's hard to ignore how messed up that character is now. I wish they could just digitally erase him from the movie, haha. But Anthony Michael Hall as The Geek is still hilarious, I will defend him forever. "What's happenin', hot stuff?" gets me every time. Honestly, I think the appeal is that it captures that awkward teenage feeling SO well. The feeling of being invisible in your own family, the yearning for someone unattainable, the sheer embarrassment of everything... it's all there. Plus, the soundtrack is killer. I just wish they could've done it without all the racism, y'know? Overall, it's a flawed classic. Watch it with a grain of salt and maybe skip past some of the REALLY offensive parts, and you can still find something to enjoy. What do you guys think? Am I being too forgiving?
