"Footloose" - More Than Just the 80s Soundtrack?

Okay, cinephiles! I'm rewatching "Footloose" (1984) for like, the millionth time, and something struck me beyond just the iconic 80s soundtrack. I'm really curious about how the director (whoever they are, lol, I should probably Google that) uses visual contrasts to highlight the clash between Ren's Chicago background and the super-repressed Bomont. Think about the scene where Ren first arrives and everything is so… beige. Literally. The clothes, the buildings, even the light feels muted compared to how I imagine Chicago would look. Then Ren shows up in his bright clothes and wild hair. Is it just me, or is that a really effective way to show the culture shock without being too on-the-nose? I noticed a similar thing with the church scenes – so much oppressive structure and rule, contrasted with the free-flowing movement when they're secretly practicing dancing in the warehouse. What do you guys think? Am I reading too much into this, or is there some actual clever visual storytelling going on here? And does the film hold up beyond just being a fun, nostalgic trip? Curious to hear your takes!
