Okay, "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs," WTF Just Happened?!

So, I just finished watching "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs" (I know, super old, but Criterion Collection rabbit holes are REAL, people!). And... I'm kinda speechless? Like, Raoul decides his wife Solange is sad (and she REALLY is, like comically so), and his solution is to...offer her up to another dude?! I get that they're going for some kind of absurdist humor thing, but I'm honestly not sure if I found it funny or just disturbing. I mean, Gérard Depardieu is obviously amazing (when isn't he?), but the whole premise felt so weirdly detached. And then Christian comes along, this like, uber-sensitive kid who's apparently a prodigy. The whole dynamic between him and Solange felt...icky? I don't know, maybe it's just me being a modern viewer, but it felt super inappropriate. The scene where he's playing the piano and she's just...staring at him? Uncomfortable. Also, Raoul is supposed to be this caring husband, but seriously, who thinks THIS is a good idea?!?!? I'm trying to decide if I think it's some sort of brilliant commentary on relationships and depression or just a completely bonkers French movie from the 70s that hasn't aged well (or maybe both!). Did anyone else see this and have similar feelings? Am I missing something crucial? I'm genuinely curious what other people thought...or maybe I should just stick to rom-coms next time lmao. Also, anyone else think that ending was just... abrupt? Like, BAM, credits roll. What was the point?! This movie is gonna haunt my thoughts for a week I already know it.
