Old School Strange: Anyone Else Remember the 1978 Dr. Strange Movie?
Okay, so I was digging through some old movies the other day – trying to find something the whole family could maybe tolerate – and stumbled upon the 1978 Dr. Strange movie. Talk about a blast from the past! I'd almost forgotten this thing existed. It's SO different from the Benedict Cumberbatch versions, haha. More like a really long TV episode than a proper movie, y'know? Peter Hooten as Dr. Strange is... interesting. He's very '70s handsome, that's for sure. The magic effects are hilariously dated, but honestly, that's part of the charm. The whole storyline with the evil Morgan le Fay (Jessica Walter, who is ALWAYS amazing) trying to corrupt the young woman, Clea Lake, was actually kinda creepy in a low-budget way. I think my teenagers might have actually chuckled at some of the special effects, but they were also intrigued. It's a very slow burn, compared to the modern superhero flicks we're used to. I think what really made it work for me (and surprisingly, even the kids) was the sort of innocent quality to it. It's a very simple story, good versus evil, with a main character who's genuinely trying to do the right thing. No crazy multiverse stuff or universe-ending stakes... just a psychiatrist trying to figure out how to use his newfound magical abilities to protect someone. It was fun, and a nice change of pace from the usual superhero bombast. Did anyone else see this back in the day? Or just stumbled upon it like me? I'm curious what other people thought! Overall, I'd say it's... a fun piece of Marvel history. Don't go in expecting a modern blockbuster, and you might be pleasantly surprised. Maybe a family movie night option for the more nostalgic amongst us :)
