Okay, Okay, "Jesus" (1979) - Let's Talk Robes!
So, I finally watched "Jesus" (the 1979 one, obvs). Look, I'm not super religious, but I AM super into costume design, even when it's... well, biblical. And honestly? It's a mixed bag. I mean, it's trying to be authentic to the time, I get it. Lots of browns and off-whites. But sometimes it just felt kinda…drab? Like everyone raided a beige linen warehouse. Specifically, I was kind of distracted by how uniformly clean everyone seemed. Like, Jesus walking around the desert STILL in pristine robes? Come ON! A little distressing, some dirt, maybe a tear or two would've gone a long way. Simon Peter gets a pass, I guess, he seems like the kinda guy who'd get grubby fishing, but still. And Judas? I feel like they could have given him something a little more... I dunno... textured? Something that hinted at his inner turmoil. Missed opportunity, IMO. That being said, there were moments where I thought it worked. The Pharisees definitely had that "power-dressing" thing down, even back then. The layering and the little tassels and stuff made them feel appropriately…intimidating. And the Roman soldiers? Their armor looked legit heavy and imposing, which is what you want. Overall, it was visually okay, but I feel like the costumes could have been used to tell a much deeper story. Like literally just some dirt on the actors robes would have helped! Final thought? It's interesting from a historical fashion perspective, but don't expect a runway show. LOL. Anyone else see this? What did you think of the costumes?
