Okay, I Finally Watched "Jesus" (1979) - Let's Talk
So, I finally caved and watched "Jesus" (1979). I know, I know, it's like the Jesus movie, everyone's seen it probably. But I'm always wary of biblical epics, they can be cheesy and, honestly, kinda boring. This one... well, it was definitely something. It's basically just the Gospel of Luke acted out which, fair enough, but can also feel a little...stiff? Like, everyone's just reciting lines. The guy playing Jesus (Brian Deacon, I think?) had a real serenity to him though, which worked. There's this one scene, the Sermon on the Mount, where he's just radiating peace, and his eyes... yeah, he really sold it there. But let's be real, some of the other acting was a bit... wooden. Sorry, not sorry. What really struck me was how... literal everything was. Like, no attempt to really interpret or add layers, y'know? It's just... boom, miracle, boom, parable. On one hand, I appreciate the commitment to the source material. On the other, it felt a little... flat? Still, I can see why it's so popular, especially for people who want a visual representation of the gospels. It's definitely a powerful experience, even if it wasn't totally my cup of tea. I just wish there was a little more emotional depth. Would I watch it again? Probably not immediately. Did I get something out of it? Absolutely. Also, can we talk about the scene where he heals the leper? Okay, visually, that was impactful. But the makeup on the leper... it looked like someone just threw oatmeal on him. I'm nitpicking, I know, but small details like that kinda took me out of the moment. Overall though, a solid 6/10 for me. Definitely thought-provoking, if a little...dry. What did you guys think? Anyone else remember watching this in Sunday school?
