Okay, Okay, Hear Me Out: 'Richard Pryor: Live in Concert' is… Overrated?

Alright, settle down, everyone. I know, I KNOW. Saying anything even remotely critical about Richard Pryor is basically sacrilege. But hear me out. I finally watched 'Richard Pryor: Live in Concert' (the one from '79) and… I wasn't blown away. There, I said it. Look, he's obviously talented, a great storyteller, and yeah, he busted down some doors for comedy. But I think it's aged... not badly, but definitely noticeably. Some of the bits, especially the ones about race, felt a little too simplistic for my taste. Like, he's preaching to the choir, right? And the whole freebasing bit? I get it, it's raw and confessional, but it also felt kinda... performative? Like he was playing up the 'crazy addict' persona a bit too much. Maybe I'm just a cynical jerk. And don't even get me started on the pacing. Man, it felt like it dragged in places. I almost nodded off during the bits about his heart attack. He's a funny man, I'm a fan of his earlier work, but this particular concert? Just wasn't hitting the highs everyone else seems to claim. Maybe it's one of those things that was revolutionary at the time, but now it's just…eh. What do you guys think? Am I completely off base here?
