Okay, "Romancing the Stone"... Colour Me Surprised!

Alright, so I dove into "Romancing the Stone" (1984) last night, mostly because I've been trying to branch out from my usual stuff. I gotta say, I was genuinely entertained! I knew basically nothing going in, other than it being 'an 80s classic' that my mom kept mentioning. Turns out Kathleen Turner can actually act, which was a surprise! I'd only ever seen her in like, voice roles before. I thought she played the 'fish out of water' thing really well, too. Like, she's a romance novelist suddenly thrust into this jungle adventure – totally believable, unlike some action movies I could name. The whole situation was just very far fetched but believable due to the acting. All of it. Michael Douglas was pretty good too, even if he was giving off major Han Solo vibes. The whole 'gruff but secretly a good guy' thing is a trope for a reason, I guess. The cheesy dialogue was probably a product of the era. But, I will say, I did find it funny when he gave her like, jungle survival tips with that monotone voice. Definitely chuckled at that. And Danny DeVito being Danny DeVito... iconic. Though, honestly, his character was kinda one-note, wasn't he? Overall, it was a fun watch! Maybe a little predictable at times, and the pacing felt kinda off in the middle. But the scenery was amazing, and the chemistry between Turner and Douglas worked. I could see why it's considered a classic. I'd give it a solid 7.5/10. Anyone else a fan? What other 'adventure' movies from that era should I check out next? Oh shoot, I just remembered I didn't even talk about the STONE. Well, the thing was just a MacGuffin that moved the plot forward. Definitely was there to move the plot, but I guess that is its purpose! It did its job.
