Pryor in '79: Funniest sh*t ever, or am I missing something?

Alright folks, mikecinema back again. Had a night in and finally got around to watching "Richard Pryor: Live in Concert" (the '79 one). Dude was a legend, no doubt, but I'm wondering if the hype is totally deserved? Hear me out before you grab your pitchforks. The bit about the heart attack and freebasing? Holy crap, dark humor at its finest. And when he's imitating his old man? Comedy gold. But some of the stuff about race… I'm not saying it's not funny, but I felt like maybe I was missing some of the context, y’know? Like, the references to certain attitudes and events... I wasn't around back then. Maybe it's a generational thing, and some of the impact is lost on me. Or maybe I'm just a philistine who doesn't fully appreciate comedic genius, ha! I'm mostly into action flicks, so this is outside my wheelhouse. Anyone else feel this way, or am I the only one thinking it was great, but not everything landed perfectly? Help a brother out. What am I missing?
