Brubaker: Did anyone else find the ending...unsatisfying?

Hey everyone, OliviaCinema here! Just finished watching 'Brubaker' (1980) with Robert Redford and I'm...torn. The premise is fantastic: new warden posing as a prisoner to uncover corruption? Classic setup, and Redford sells the brooding, idealistic thing perfectly. I was totally hooked by the middle, especially when he starts uncovering the graves and the horrible medical "care." But man, that ending felt so abrupt and, frankly, depressing. He gets fired, basically for doing his job? And then the prisoners just…watch him drive away? Like, no real call to action, no consequences for the guys who were running the show. Am I the only one who thought it felt like a real letdown after all that build-up? Maybe I was expecting a more Hollywood ending, but the way the movie kinda just fizzled out left me feeling really deflated. I also thought the character of Lillian Gray (Jane Alexander) -- the "outsider" advocacy person -- felt kinda tacked on? Like, she was important to expose the abuse early on, but then she basically disappears and doesn't have much of an impact on Brubaker's decisions. Did anyone else feel that way? Curious to hear your thoughts! Maybe I missed something important. Or maybe I just wanted a happier ending, lol.
